- mantis: 0003000: [* IT] IT strategy: Buy vs Lease vs Cloud
Core requirements
Jaguar as a company:
- needs a strategy for infrastructure (Buy PCs vs Lease PCs vs "go Cloud")
- evaluate cloud solutions as "cloud" becomes very popular
This needs to be done in 1-2 month time frame.
Recommendation needs to be presented to Simon.
Pilot should be conducted if necessary (moving selected user group into cloud).
Should be done in coordination/participation of MT vendor.
History and Misc Notes
- Paul/Michael conducted research comparing costs of Buy vs Lease vs some cloud solutions. See attachments in mantis 3000. This could be re-used.
- Rackspace recommended desktone.com solution. I suggest to consider that as an option.
- Detailed requirements needs to be carefully gathered: files sharing, application, etc.
- Partial cloud solution could be considered. Say moving files into cloud but leaving Quick books in house.
- Total cost must be considered and compared.
- Excellent internet connection is important for many cloud solutions. Do we have one? Can we get one?
- There are many flavors of cloud
All services/applications needs to be considered:
Ops:
- CT2 [FFox] (already in the cloud)
- Sugar [ffox]
- MS Office
- Adobe pdf reader/writer
- Scanning / scan files folders
- shared files

Partial cloud solution could be:
- host files in Dropbox
- replace MS Office with google docs or Open Office
Windows could be replaced with Ubuntu (free, lower requirements for memory, cute name )
Some business/contingency requirements for cloud:
- on snow day users can work from home
- disaster - data is safe + jag ops can continue working
Backup solution could be simpler if we migrate to cloud. What would it be?
