Business Needs and Requirements

Definition 1: (from businessdictionary.com)

Document issued by a shipping company to acknowledge that goods have been received for shipment. Dock receipt transfers the accountability for the safe custody of the cargo from the shipper to the carrier, and serves as the basis for preparing the bill of lading.

Definition 2: (from oceanfreightusa.com)

Formally dock receipt is a document issued by an ocean carrier to acknowledge receipt of a shipment at the carrier's ship terminal. For LCL shipments carrier’s dock receipt also verifies w/m of cargo received by the ship terminal.

However, in respect of dealing with a freight forwarder a Dock Receipt is a document given to the shipper for a purpose of allowing his/her shipment to be delivered to the carrier’s pier or ship terminal. When delivery is completed, the dock receipt is surrendered to the carrier. Bill of Lading will be issued based on the information in the Dock Receipt.

Typically, with certain exceptions (for example, when deliver a motor vehicle to a pier without a power of attorney given to the delivery person) shipper does not have to be physically present when submitting cargo to the shipment. Any authorized by you person or company can deliver your goods to the shipping terminal on your behalf. You may consider the Dock Receipt “a ticket for your cargo”.

The Dock Receipt can be delivered to the shipper in different ways: via fax or e-mail, with a tracker when ship FCL etc.
