Formally dock receipt is a document issued by an ocean carrier to acknowledge receipt of a shipment at the carrier's ship terminal. For LCL shipments carrier’s dock receipt also verifies w/m of cargo received by the ship terminal.

However, in respect of dealing with a freight forwarder a Dock Receipt is a document given to the shipper for a purpose of allowing his/her shipment to be delivered to the carrier’s pier or ship terminal. When delivery is completed, the dock receipt is surrendered to the carrier. Bill of Lading will be issued based on the information in the Dock Receipt.
